Maybe it's a good idea to collect harddrive issues here before editing article. Will start with Samsung.

Samsung HD501LJ 500GB

Failure

  • 2 HDDs in JBOD mode. Set to 1.5 Gbps mode via Jumper.

Initialisation done well, system works as it should. If hardware is off and powered on again both HDDs are missing. Softreboot brings back HDDs and system. Problem is reproducable with me! Don't know, if data is lost - it seems to be no loses but that's not for sure! So the whole thing is quite honestly annoying. --Skara 22:20, 17 November 2007 (CET)

  • 1 HDD

Initialization OK and the system is working. Hiccups when streaming videos to PS3 and transfering data between PC and Icy Box. Very annoying. Tested also in raid 1 mode with Western Digital SE16 HDD. Same results. --Zuah 07:10, 5 December 2007 (CET)

  • 1 HDD working well - needed a reboot initially for it to be rcognised - following this I have had no issues at all with the drive. Chrisp

Samsung HD103UJ 1TB

  • 2 HDD

Initially only one HDD was recognised when using 2 of the Samsung HD103UJ drives. Forced the hard drives to use 1.5Gb/s using the utility from the Samsung website [1]. Both HDDs were then recognised and could be used in JBOD or RAID modes. No problems after I'd forced them to use the lower speed. --Faceman 16:53, 26 April 2008 (BST)

  • using this drive for a week in combination with a Seagate 1TB device for a raid1 setup -- both worked out of the box, firmware 2.6.3-20080826 that came with the IcyBox branded system, no problems so far.

  • 2 HDD

Initial both drives installed and worked fine and in RAID 1 mode, then the soon after I kept having to reboot the NAS4220. One drive reported an unassigned S.M.A.R.T. attribute error and then it finally failed. I returned the HDD and the supplier confirmed it has an fault and replaced it.

The NAS4220 still kept needing to be rebooted (once every few days) and finally would not get started at all. The NAS4220 was returned to the supplier, confirmed it to be faulty and so they replaced it.

After the NAS4220 was replaced it seemed to perform better but soon another HDD failed. Again the supplier confirmed a fault with the HDD but this time it was replaced with a MAXTOR STM31000333AS.

The NAS4220 still keep getting locked up and needed to be re-boot every few days. Now another Samsung HDD has failed. I've not sent it back to supplier for analysis yet but I've replaced it with another HDD I had spare, but this time I've upgraded the firmware to 2.6.3.2-20090424. Lets see if this helps.

Now I've discovered this discussion I will update this link with events.
